Why Sheep?

The question "Why Wool?" is a common title on blogs and cloth diapering websites about all the attributes of wool and why it's perfect for babies' bottoms.

Have you every wondered, "Why Sheep?" Why is it that this animal in particular that is so carefully clad in such an amazing coat? I know there are other woolly animals, but not all animals are clothed with a fiber that keeps them warm in the winter, cool in the summer, dry all year round, clean of bacteria, unlikely to catch on fire, and on top of that excreting an oily substance that coats these fibers that is also water resistant with antibacterial properties providing even more protection!

I don't believe it is a coincidence that we find sheep, of all animals, clothed in this almost magical fiber! As I began to learn about how wool works more in depth, I exclaimed to my husband, "Wow! God must have really wanted to protect his sheep!" At that moment I was thinking of actual sheep and nothing more, but as soon as the words escaped my mouth, the depth of what I had just said struck both of us.

The Bible often refers to us as sheep, and God as our shepherd. In the new testament and old, in prophesies, songs, stories, and teachings the theme of sheep and shepherd is referred to over and over and over. Isaiah talks about what happened to Jesus and what it meant for us, hundreds of years before it came to pass. Here are just a few lines of it:

" 5 But he was pierced for our rebellion,
      crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so we could be whole.
He was whipped so we could be healed.
6 All of us, like sheep, have strayed away.
We have left God’s paths to follow our own.
Yet the Lord laid on him
      the sins of us all.
7 He was oppressed and treated harshly,
yet he never said a word.
He was led like a lamb to the slaughter.
And as a sheep is silent before the shearers,
he did not open his mouth...."(Isaiah 53, NLT).

Jesus speaks of God's heart in a story of a shepherd being willing to leave the 99 sheep to find one who was lost, and bringing him back with joy and celebration (Luke 15), so that we would understand that even if just one of us were lost and separated from God, He still would have given everything and endured everything described in the verses above, for even one. His heart is always longing and pursuing those who "like sheep have strayed away."

He also speaks of how a sheep knows his shepherd's voice and obeys him, teaching us that our relationship with Him goes beyond just being rescued and brought safely into His fold, but that we can have a relationship with Him...one of intimacy and trust. "My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me." (John 10:27) To know Him is to trust Him and know that His desire for us is for our ultimate good.

I've learned from those who've looked intently into the lives of sheep that sheep have been known to follow one another head to tail right into a ditch, piling on top of one another until the ditch was full. That has totally been me at times in my life...following people and ideas only to end up  in a "ditch." Each time, my Shepherd has intervened, pulled me out and set me on the path of peace once again. It sounds like foolishness, but for my part I have found it to be true.

The occupation of a shepherd was regarded as the lowest of the low. It was a job for nobodies, and the least of the least, and so the foolishness increases. In likening Himself to a Shepherd, God is making Himself the least and the lowest. "But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong." (1 Cor. 1:27 NIV)

And he didn't stop there, when led to the cross, "He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth...."(Isaiah 53, NLT). And so Jesus is often referred to as the Lamb of God, because He gave Himself willingly as a sacrifice, so that we could live.

"The Lord is my Shepherd. I will lack nothing." (Ps. 23:1)

Cloth Diaper Mommy Wool Soaker Review

I have already raved about the very creative and cool t-shirt diapers by Cloth Diaper Mommy on Etsy, but Becca also hand knits super creative and fun woollies to go over those fitteds...the PERFECT combination to stay cool, dry and rash free! I'd been eyeing an adorable smiley face soaker that I was planning to order for Lydia, but then I saw THIS one and just HAD to get it. Since I was learning about wool and planning for this event, it fit so perfectly. It is still, in my opinion, the cutest woolly I've ever seen! I think it's an adorable appropriate way to finish up "The Wool Gathering!"

This soaker as you can see has a sheep on the bum! It's so cute and fun. I've been using it for some time and it's and it has held up so nicely. It has been one of our favorite nighttime covers, but I also like to use it during the day because it's so cute so we usually alternate. Now that it's cooler at nights I don't want to stop using it, so we'll throw some baby legs and keep on! One detail that I love is the draw string that matches the sheep's legs! You can see that in the picture above as well as the wide gusset between the legs of the soaker to give room for a nice fit over thick diapers.

I really enjoy having this soaker! It's fun and does its job wonderfully! It's more than sufficient for overnight and fits really comfortable. It's stretchy so it will still fit for a long time! Here it is on baby during the day with a shirt during the summer. I think these are soooo cute! She's watching her baby sign language video here if I remember correctly.

Hear are a few other uber cute soakers available in Becca's shop:

Becca added these adorable knitted wool fruit toys with my order! They are so fun. I'm really impressed with the handiwork. These look really pretty laying around the floor in contrast to the many plastic toys!! Lydia loves taking them out of the toy box and laying them on the floor and then randomly picking them up and carrying them around.

Can you stand the cuteness??? I can't! Remember that Becca takes custom orders! She is very gifted and creative so get in touch with her and let her know what you like!!!

Caring For Wool

I was so nervous about washing my woollies. I have no idea why I was so concerned, but found in my searching that a lot of people felt the same way. Wool can felt if you use water that is too hot or of course if you put it through the dryer, and cold water can shock the wool. You shouldn't wring or twist as the fibers which are meant to be rough and crimped which is what causes them to stick to each other and form an insulating mesh.

I watched this video from Green Mountain Diapers several times, and finally bit the bullet, and of course it went fine. I like this video because it shows you pretty much what everyone says to do. Some wool can be machine washed, but I plan not to even go there, as it's quick and easy in the sink and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

The video is how to lanolize wool, but the process for washing is the same, you just use the wool wash and make sure it's tepid before putting the wool in. I still start with a little hot water to mix in the wash as it is enriched with lanolin.

Turns out, it's really not so bad. Quite easy. Easier than machine washing!!

Eucalan Review and $11 GC to Wee Little Changes GIVEAWAY! ***CLOSED***

Wee Little Changes is a fun and earth friendly baby boutique that carries a great variety of cloth diapering products and accessories and more! Run by April and her family from Wilmington, NC (my home state :).  She is very choosy about what items they carry:
"Wee Little Changes is dedicated to provide quality (and cute!) products that are good for your baby, the environment and your purse.  I have done countless hours of research on all of our products, and each one has been tested by my family and found to be a winner."
I LOVE the fact that Wee Little Changes offers FREE U.S. SHIPPING. Wee Little Changes also offers a unique friends rewards program through which you can earn points in a great variety of ways, and a mama rep affiliate program. I'm working on getting my points together and starting to keep track of them! I don't want to miss out on the opportunity! All these perks and the great experience I've had corresponding with April have sold me on this boutique!

When it comes to wool, April has a great plan for helping those who may be hesitant to try wool due to the cost or skepticism, by giving the opportunity for them to give wool a try!

Buy...   TRY...  Keep or Return
Limited Time Offer:  Buy a soaker, Lanolize it, USE IT and keep it if you love it, or return it within 14 days for a full refund in the form of store credit. See here for more details!

Now THAT is a GOOD deal!!! I really encourage ANYONE who has not tried wool to give this a try. It's a no lose situation!

I received a Eucalan "No-Rinse" Wool Wash by Tiny Tush for review.
"Eucalan Wool Wash - A concentrated unique "No-Rinse" environmentally friendly formula. Eucalan contains lanolin that helps restore the natural lanolin that is lost during laundering. The eucalyptus oil deters wool-eating pests from feasting on your wool garments. This product can be used for both hand or machine washing.

This wash comes in a 3.3 US fl. oz. or 16.9 US fl. oz. bottle and is natural and unscented.  Also available in a sample size (.17 ounce).  Safe for those with sensitive skin."

Eucalan Wool Wash is highly recommended and used by many experienced moms. I was happy to have a chance to give it a try! I found that it worked great, and since it is enriched with lanolin, it reduces big time the amount of times you need to use gooey lanolin!

To use it you mix about a teaspoon into warm water and then fill the sink with tepid water. It will be quite bubbly. Simply place the soaker or cover into the water and let it sit for about 15 minutes.

Then let the water drain out and remove the soaker. There will still be lots of bubbles as seen the in the first picture below, but DO NOT RINSE or WRING, but very gently squeeze a bit of the excess water out without twisting it. Next you roll it up between two towels to gently remove most of the water. Finally you just lay it flat to dry. Easy Peasy! It usually takes about 24 hours to dry.

This wool wash has worked great for me and I definitely recommend it, though I have found that I am partial to bar soap overall because it is almost impossible to waste, but the liquid is super easy to use.

******GIVEAWAY*******

Wool Dryer Balls by The Tree Huggin' Mama- Review and GIVEAWAY!***CLOSED***

Photobucket

Tree Huggin' Designs is a mom owned Etsy shop carrying wool dryer balls, cloth wipes, baby blankets, organic clothing, and more! I stumbled across, "The Tree Huggin' Momma," a very cool blog a while back and was drawn to it when I saw that her sweet baby boy came early and was struggling with some health issues, especially since my own baby was also a preemie born around the same time.  I was interested in her story, and that is how I discovered this great shop! Let me share Heather's story with you in her own words:
Last October I became a Mommy! However, my son, Xavier, was born a month early and as a result ended up on constant oxygen and also an apnea monitor.  We were told that these issues would clear up by his original due date; however, that wasn't the case and when I was supposed to go back to work when he was 3 months old he was still requiring both pieces of equipment.  I tried to go back to work; however, with all of Xavier's health issues I couldn't give my job the attention required.  I was constantly driving back and forth to the day care fixing equipment issues, taking Xavier to doctor appointments and also heading to a different health care facility to pick up oxygen tank refills.  Plus, I had a sick baby that I was worried about every minute I was away from him!  It only took a couple weeks of this before my husband and I decided it would be best if I quit to be at home with him.  That was when I decided to open an Etsy shop in hopes to help offset the loss of my income.  I started with bibs, blankets and wipes but now focus more on the eco-friendly items like cloth wipes & wool dryer balls.  I'm also currently working on a cloth diaper pattern and baby/toddler clothing which I hope to perfect in the next few months.  Oh, and I'm happy to announce that Xavier came off of the oxygen at the end of January and we were finally able to stop using the apnea monitor about a month ago!
Here is a sampling of some of the adorable items available at Tree Huggin' Designs:

Since I've been fascinated with wool, and am always excited about finding ways to cut back on spending, I was excited for the opportunity to review two 100% wool dryer balls from Tree Huggin' Designs!

I had tried some plastic dryer balls, and was curious to find out if the wool ones work any better, and I have discovered that they do! Since adding these balls to the drying cycle, our clothes, diapers, and towels have seemed to dry more quickly and thoroughly. During a long humid spell it seemed that the clothes were always still damp even when the cycle ended, but since using these balls I rarely found that happening.

There are many more benefits to these wool dryer balls than just the function of separating the clothing and causing more exposure to the hot air. They also absorb moisture AND reduce static electricity.

One thing I have found is that the plastic balls that we had were spiky all over and I always felt like they would possibly be rough on my diaper covers and more delicate clothing, but with these soft smooth wool dryer balls, I feel totally comfortable. Not only that, they are much less noisy in the dryer! The plastic ones make very loud vibrating banging sounds, which aren't helpful when my little one is napping, but the wool balls make dull thuds that just provide rhythmic background noise.

I've been using these dryer balls for sometime and they're holding up nicely. I've had no problems with unraveling in spite of my forgetting to attach some aplix during drying and it's sticking to them a couple of times. These are sturdy dryer balls!

I HIGHLY recommend trying out Tree Huggin' Designs wool dryer balls. Here are some of the other colors available now!

********GIVEAWAY*******

Heather has generously given me two more wool dryer balls (same as those I reviewed above) to one very blessed reader!

Emmaya Naturals, Wool Wash and Lanolizing Product GIVEAWAY! ***CLOSED***

Long before I gave wool a chance, I received some a free sample of a handmade "Sudz n' Dudz" wool wash bar from Emmaya Naturals in a prize I won from the Diaper Pin during their 10 year anniversary contest last Spring. I was drawn to the attractive card that came with it, and the nice fragrance. I held on to it "just in case" I ever got brave enough to try wool. Boy, am I glad I did! When I finally did get some wool, this helped me go a long time without having to lanolize the cover. It was super easy to use and guess what...I still have enough in that tiny little bar for quite a few more washes.
I wrote a post on this blog some time ago about how I'd started using bar soap for bathing because it is so economical and difficult to waste, and I think that holds true for wool wash as well. I will definitely be getting more of this. I think it's great that Emmaya Naturals offers these samples on their site as well. Many are hesitant to spend money on wool products when they want to just give it a try first, and this is a great way to make trying wool less expensive.

Finally using the sample caused me to go to Emmaya Naturals website and I was so impressed with what I discovered! Turns out I'm not the only one who was so impressed with the long lasting, great smelling, effectiveness of this bar of wool wash, AND that it is intentionally designed to be long lasting and affordable!

"Sudz are hand-crafted with organically processed oils from organically grown plants and pleasantly scented with the finest essential oils and quality fragrance oils. The oils used for my wool wash bars and liquid wool wash are certified organic and carefully chosen for their mildness and gentle but thorough cleansing properties. All Sudz bars have excellent stain-removal capabilities and they are enriched with lanolin so you can skip more of those messy sink treatments. I have formulated a bar that, with proper care, is long lasting and very economical. I actually have customers complaining that it's too good...they want to try different scents, but no matter how hard they try, they just can't make the bar disappear! (Italics added by me for emphasis.)
It's available in 12 different frangrances, and I too find myself wanting to try them all. It looks like I'll be a LONG time customer of Emmaya Naturals!
As you see in the quote above, Emmaya Naturals products are handcrafted and formulated by them! Here's a little more about this intriguing company and family:
Sudz 'n Dudz.com was founded in 2005, and its sister company Emmaya Naturals.com (retail site) was founded soon after in 2006. Sudz 'n Dudz was the first organic wool care product introduced to the cloth diapering world, and their products are top rated on The Diaper Pin (and THAT is saying something!!!!!!!) Emmaya Naturalas is family owned and operated by a Christian homeschooling Air Force family that recently moved from Texas to Alaska! (You can see more about the Koziol's adventures on their family blog). They have sent support/pampering packages to troops in Afghanistan and support several charitable organizations with our profits,  including Arms of Hope,  Disability Resources Incorporated, and A Child's Voice Foundation! Even in my correspondence with this company I have been so impressed with the kindness and compassion that shows through Meg! I am certain you will not find better customer service anywhere!

I found it really neat that Emmaya Naturals offers custom forumlary and will work with you to create new products that suit your needs! Current projects include lanolin-free handwashables soap and lip balm! At Emmaya Naturals, they love making new things, and many products currently available are results of these requests!
Emmaya Naturals offers many more wool care products as well as beauty products, bath and body products, home and laundry products and so much more! Other wool care products include:

Meg has very generously offered one very blessed reader a wool wash product AND a lanolizing product! The winner can choose from Organic Liquid Wool Wash or Organic Wool Wash Bar for washing, AND the Organic Lanolin, Liquid Lanolin, or No-Clump Lanolin Spray for lanolizing!

WoollyBums on Etsy: A Review and 20% off Discount for Followers!

If you've been hanging around here, you already know about WoollyBums on Etsy! I've already showed you her adorable, plush, bamboo fitteds, and you may already know that she's about to release a new exciting product: a side snapping AI2 diaper with lots of customizable options with the soaker made of the bamboo that she's known and loved for. If I've got your curiosity up you can look at Alicia's latest blog post to learn more!

However, as the name "WoollyBums" implies, Alicia does not only sew amazingly, but she also loves to knit soft, adorable woollies. You can find some of her works of art ready to order...

...and many more custom listings! WoollyBums offers custom shorties and longies with fun options like ruffles on the cuffs or on the bum, or even a face on the bum!

You can also order a matching beanie or cupcake hat!

Here are a couple of really unique and I think super cool knitted wool items that are now available at WoollyBums. I think these are just precious!

An acorn hat for the fall!

A photo prop for your newborn!!!

I am the blessed gal that got this beautiful set of of longies with a matching cupcake hat (which is now a custom listing!) I saw the above cupcake set in WoollyBums shop, I was inspired to do a cupcake themed birthday party for Lydia, with this hat as one of our gifts to her.

WoollyBums knits with 100% wool, and all of her longies and shorties come lanolized and ready to use! I enjoyed working with Alicia on my custom order. I chose these longies with this lovely picot edge in this LOVELY favorite color combo.

And of course the adorable hat:

My review:

As I've already mentioned, it's been great working with Alicia. She is very attentive to detail and offers great customer service. You can tell she really loves knitting and puts her heart into it! As she says in her bio, she makes each woollie with loving care and thinks about the little ones who will wear them!

I have been thoroughly enjoying these longies!!! I go back and forth between using them during the day and at night because they're so pretty I want to use them in the day with a pink shirt and bow (as you'll see in the pictures below), but they offer such a GREAT night solution for winter. They keep her legs warm and keep her bum cool and dry!  They work wonderfully through the night with my heavy wetter with a nice thick fitted.

One detail I was really impressed with was the tag in the back of the longies. It's so cute and so professional!

Alicia also sent these nice care instructions:

Here it is on baby...this was this summer right after we got them. Obviously she loves them!!! Right after a nice bath, who wouldn't love some soft woollies on their legs?

And here she is in them just yesterday, being a jumping bean in daddy's arms! (Sorry...they were all so cute, I couldn't pick just one!!!)

I also love the fit of the hat. We can't convince her to keep a hat on for long right now, but I can't wait to take her out in the colder weather with her matching hat and longies!!! Here she is with the hat right after she received it at her cupcake birthday party! She'd already pulled it off a little...we've got to get her used to wearing a hat little by little. Just trust me. It's a PERFECT fit!

Alicia is offering Cheap and Choosy Readers who also follow her blog a 20% discount through the end of this event (Oct. 31st)! Just let her know I sent you and that you follow her blog! I'd say it's time to get woolly for winter!!!
